Secret: The Armor of God: Belt of Truth

Bible Blast:  Read Ephesians 6:10-18
Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth. Ephesians 6:14

I'm a big fan of belts. One of my favorite belts has a fancy peacock feather over the buckle. Yes, I am definitely a belt girl! It's easy for me to picture the Belt of Truth as being brown leather with shiny silver studs on it. But as I looked more into the original Greek of the New Testament, I found out that's not really the kind of belt Scripture is talking about. In the original language it says something more like, "have your loins gird about with truth."

"Loins" basically refers to the hips and pelvis area of your body. "Gird about" is something that we don't really do very much in our culture. In the Bible days, the people wore a piece of clothing called a tunic, something like a dress or robe. Over top of that they wore a belt-like thing called a girdle. The girdle kept the tunic in place throughout the day, and at night they loosened it for comfort while they slept. Sometimes the tunic's length got in the way of work or battle. So the people would "gird up their loins" by bringing up the bottom of their tunic and tucking it into the girdle (belt). This way they wouldn't trip on the long fabric of the tunic.

Have you ever gotten tripped up when you wear something long and "flowy"? When I wear a really long skirt, I have to be careful not to trip on it, especially when I'm going up and down steps. It sure would be handy if I could just grab the bottom of my skirt and tuck it into my belt!

We need to make sure we know the truth of God's Word, or we can be easily tripped up by all the lies floating around us. Like, if you don't know the truth about the creation of the world in the book of Genesis, you might be tempted to believe it was made from a big explosion millions and millions of years ago.

When we're told to put on the belt of truth, the Bible is really telling us that we need to know the truth of God so that when times of battle come, we'll be ready to fight!

Girl Gab:
Mom, brainstorm with your daughter some ways we get to know the truth of God. Daughter, what's one way you can learn more of God's truth today? Now get out there and gird up your loins, girlfriend!
